If the price of an original Carrera Panamerica Ferrari 340 Mexico is slightly out of reach (one recently sold for $4.3million), how about commissioning GWA Tuning to create one of their stunning Ferrari 456-based re-creations.

Boasting over 475bhp from its 5.4-litre V12, the 340 Mexico Berlinetta's is built using many modern Ferrari parts including brakes, suspension plus a hand-crafted aluminium body.

The retro theme continues inside the cockpit complete with vintage dials and steering wheel, blending perfectly with carbon fibre seats. The six speed manual gearbox complete with open shift-gate completes the bespoke feel.

Dyrham Park Hill Climb - SPIRIT OF THE 60s

These photos were taken at the recent 1961-65 Dyrham Park Hill Climb re-enactment near Bristol. The event was a great success, with beautiful weather and a great range of cars, including some that took part in the original event.

Lots of people attended too, probably more than expected for this modest event, causing some local traffic problems on the local roads.

The event maintained a very relaxed atmosphere and it was great to see Paul Dickinson with his fantastic Volkswagen Type 3 Notchback. There were also escorted runs up the original track. Take a look on the Bristol Motor Club website for more info and entry list.

FIA GT1 Silverstone 2011

Free tickets to Silverstone to watch the fire spitting GT cars? Yes please. This was my first visit to 'The home of British Motor Racing' since the new track layout and pit complex was finished earlier in the year. I can safely say the owners have succeeded in dragging the old Silverstone into the 21st Century providing the UK with a truly world class venue to host the likes of Formula One and any other international event.

An under whelming number of spectators did make feel a little soul-less on the Sunday but the number of crashes on track made up for it.

The GT3, GT4 and Lamborghini Trofeo races all supported the GT1 main event.

CARMAXX Bugster 9.03 - The Boxster Beetle

I've always admired 'sleeper' creations, but what could be more fitting than a tuned Boxster masquerading as VW Beetle? We've all seen German look VWs powered by angry Type 4 or Porsche engines hanging out the back, but this creation retains almost all of the Boxster's renowned handling and balance.

CARMAXX Automobiles founder Siegfried Rudolf completed an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic at Porsche where he successfully passed the master examination. From 1989 to 1999 Rudolf then worked for VW.

In the early 70s VW, Porsche and Audi specialist Artz produced a one-off mid-engined Beetle with a 2.7RS engine and 914/6 underpinnings. Is that where Rudolf first saw it done? Modern engineering techniques and the Boxster platform combine to produce a more powerful and no doubt reliable version.

Under this humble 1970s Super Beetle body hides a full plate of Boxster S running gear including mid mounted 270PS 3.2-litre flat six engine and original six speed gearbox. Look up 'sleeper' in the German dictionary and you'd half expect to find details of the Bugster.

The idea came to Siegfried one day having parked his tuned Beetle Cabrio 1303 next to his wife's Porsche Boxster S. Looking at the dimensions and surveying the two vehicles it was clear to him that the idea was feasible.

With no fixed prices, the spec can be tailor made to suit buyer's requirements. Now that the logistics of such a creation has been mastered by CARMAXX, it is also possible to fit the 996 and even GT3 powerplants! Just imagine the look on a 911 driver's face..

Weighing just 1098kg the Bugster 9.03 promises performance in abundance and handling to match. Painted in Lamborghini Grigio Telesto Metallic and incorporating the trademark Boxster side air intakes the finished product looks truly wunderbar and is a credit to the company founder's engineering talent.

As I live within a stones throw from the Docklands Excel exhibition centre, it's a bit of a no brainer on whether I should pop down and visit the London Motorcycle Show. As last years show was well worth the effort- if only to try on a possible new helmet..I caught the DLR 'toy train' on Saturday morning direct to the Excel Ehibition Centre. One of the best parts of the show for me is that manufacturers allow punters to climb around on their current range and try-bikes-on for size. A smattering of classics also keeps me coming back.

A pretty pair of Ducatis fresh from the Moto Giro Italia last year were found hiding in a quiet corner as was a stunning £60,000 one-off Ducati 1088RS set to inspire future road bikes.

The new Norton Commando 961 Cafe Rcaer was as popular as ever with the latest parts bin special model attracting the most admiring glances.

Finally this cutaway VFR750R RC30 caught my eye, a bike that has probably done more shows than you've had hot dinners over the years, proving just how advanced the highly successful road racer was when it came to UK shores in 1990, yes 21 years ago!

Driving thrill seekers EVO Magazine have driven the one-off Lancia Stratos recreation and are happy to report that it possesses many of it's own personal traits despite sharing many parts with Ferrari's 'old' F430.

The short wheelbase, combined with a rev hungry V8 producing 532bhp should make for rather nimble if not slightly twitchy supercar performance. Styling wise, the privately funded project has hit the nail well and truly on the head. Visit EVO to find out more.

Audi Quattro Concept

As part of a design competition held amongst Audi designers to create a model that celebrates 3o years since the introduction of the original Quattro, the winning concept shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show is in my opinion, rather exciting. Based on a shortened and lightened Audi A5 platform, the Quattro Concept displays very purposeful looks highly reminiscent of the homologated SWB versions.

Located up front, under the bonnet the Quattro Concept uses a modified version of the 2.5-litre, five cylinder turbocharged engine normally found in the TT RS- an award winning powerplant with huge reserves of torque.

If the 4WD Quattro Concept ever made it into production my guess would be that it would be priced somewhere around the entry level Porsche 911 mark, ,the R8 maintaining flagshiop status.

Triumph Tiger 800

Triumph has finally released official images of their new mid-size adventure/trail bike the Tiger 800. Utilising a stroked version of the excellent Daytona's 675cc, 124bhp, 53lb/ft triple, the new 800cc motor is expected to produce a little less power and approximately 10-15% more torque.

The British brand seem to be going from strength to strength with the release of their new middle-weight adventure machine and have clearly enjoyed teasing the media and biking community with various 'sneak previews' of the Tiger 800.

Available in two versions, one road based with a 19 inch front wheel and one adventure version called the Tiger XC with a 21 inch hoop and knobbly rubber (shown above), Triumph are clearly aiming for a share in the market currently held by BMW's F800GS.

Using an open style steel tube frame, the Tiger 800 also attempts to bridge the gap between BMW's 1200GS machine and the smaller capacity GS models. Be very worried BMW..

Aprilia's handsome Tuono V-twin has been on my wish list for a while now and with the promise of the new V4 engined version based on the latest RSV4 on it's way, the itch has got stronger. Although Italian, build quilty and reliability is rumoured to be of a very high standard. An 'Italian BMW' has been said before!

The new V4 engined bike is said to be lighter, more powerful and with better handling and with price approaching £10,000 you should dam well hope so. This rendering image show lines more reminiscent of a muscle bike than the original, Aprilia clearly relying on the magnificent reception of the RSV4's motor to attract buyers, although some design features may be passed over. Me, I still want the original- I must be getting old!

The entry list included two E30 M3s, a raft of front and four wheel drive hatchbacks and plenty of the 'old favourite' Mk2 Escorts- it wouldn't be a real Irish rally without 'em.

Nevertheless I think this may make up for it! Over the weekend I managed to coax my girlfriend Claire onto Dad's Manx for a truly 1950s style photo shoot! It also gave me the chance to get to grips with a new camera..

CAV America Honda CB450 'Manx Tribute'

Johann Keyser of CAV America, usually builds rather tasty looking official Gulf livered Ford GT40 replicas. In his spare time he has now built this 'retro mod' Manx Norton tribute Honda CB450 you see above. Intending to offer economy in the style of a cafe racer, Keyser has produced something which looks great and has some fantastic features, but what I want to know is when was a cafe racer ever meant to be economical?

A good effort in my opinion but if he wants my advice, he should stick to his gorgeous GT40s and maybe look into producing usable, reliable Tritons. Just an idea Johann..

Yamaha Super Tenere 1200

Yamaha have pulled the covers off the Super Tenere 1200, the company's latest super-trailie adventure model. Any attempt at distracting prospective BMW GS owners can only be a good thing for this particular segment, healthy competition promoting constant development across all manufacturers.

So how does the new Super Tenere compare to the 'Ewan me' BMW 1200 GS? Well, the Tenere is based around a water cooled 1199cc, 270 degree parallel twin producing 108bhp and 84 ft lbs set low in a steel tubed backbone style chassis. Side mounted radiators double up as wind protection on the move (although dropping it could prove troublesome!) and shaft drive provides the necessary rugged propulsion characteristics.

Conventional USD telescopic forks and rear twin-sided swing arm set the Super Tenere well apart from the GS, Yamaha obviously keen to stick to the XT's traditonal chassis layout.

The list of tech-trickery includes ABS, a chip controlled throttle and Yamaha's new D-MODE traction control system, allowing the rider to select between Sport and Touring modes. Fully fueled the Yamaha Super Tenere weighs in at 261kg- very close to that of a GS Adventure, the bike Yamaha are clearly targetting.

If the previous Tenere by Yamaha is anything to go by this bike is sure to be well built, easy to ride and with front lights mimicing an R1, will be instantly recognisable as Yamaha, unlike the gordy looking XT660 based sibling. As the GS remains BMW's best seller, Yamaha are keen to secure a chunk of this market, but will have to convince people to spend £13,500 for the privelidge. A faintly ludicrous £3,000 more than a standard GS Adventure!

The first models available come with the full adventure pack which includes alloy panniers, engine skid plate, headlight protector and the all important 'first edition' sticker! No, me neither. Check out Yamaha's clever new video, highlighting the advances in motorcycle technology packaged into the new Super Tenere.

The Great Escape Tours- by Royal Enfield!

Having caught the Royal Enfield bug (amongst others) whilst completing the Enduro Himalaya trip in northern India in 2008, I have decided it is time for another foray into the world of relaxed motorcycle touring mixed with incredible scenery.

The Great Escape Tours are run by fun loving Scot, Kenny Finlayson who is based up in the Scottish Highlands along with his fleet of trusty Indian made Royal Enfield 500 Bullets. The four different trips on offer include The Classic, The Orkney, Your Way and the one I've just signed up to, The Western Isles.

Starting from Ullapool on the north west coast of Scotland, the tour aims to 'island-hop' its way towards the Outer Hebrides, with the Isle of Skye as first port of call. If you've never been to this part of the British Isles may I strongly recommend you do so. My last visit was on a hiking trip and it didn't take long before I was imagining what it must be like to tour such empty, scenery-rich roads on a bike.

The tours organized by Kenny are about taking your time, exploring the magic that this part of Scotland still emphatically displays whilst tasting the food, meeting the locals and having great fun along the way. All the more, whilst astride an Enfield, you have the perfectly relaxed mode of transport on which to soak it all in.

The cost of the tours include all meals, fuel and luggage transfer by support vehicle, allowing you to concentrate fully on the task in hand- enjoying yourself!

With a spare day planned in Ullapool at the end of the five day trip, I also intend to bring my new CCM Supermoto along for what I hope will be one memorable blat over the neighbouring highlands. Well you would, wouldn't you?

ROAD TEST: 2001 CCM 604E DS

CCM (Clews Competition Machines) made a name for themselves producing purposeful twin shock motorcross bikes in the 1970s, more recently however the British company has moved towards developing hardy enduro and supermoto bikes.

The 98-02 604E Dual Sport model came with two sets of wheels when new, for both on and off road capability. An oil-in-frame contains a twin port, four valve, 600cc Rotax motor from Austria. Although not revolutionary in it's design, the Rotax engine is well known for its simplicity and ease of maintenance plus abundant levels of torque. Power is a conservative 52bhp and torque an impressive 36ftlbs.

Throwing a leg over the 604, the riding position is immediately recognisable from a modern motorcross bike. The wide, fat Renthal riser bars and firm, thin seat are designed to allow movement on the bike whilst allowing for excellent cornering control- this is definitely no long distance tourer! At 123kg the CCM is neither overweight nor particularly light in this segment, nevertheless, if you are used to more conventional road bikes, dropping it would not require the assistance of Geoff Capes.

Avoiding kicking the big single over, I opt for the electric start which rewards instantly with a deeply satisfying crackle from the Remus branded standard exhaust. A clever choke mechanism keeps the engine idling at a happy note and within a minute or two we are up to temperature with one another. Unable to ignore the level torque on offer, the CCM dispatches with first and second gears very quickly, surging up to it's top speed of 100mph within the first 100m or so. Then you reach your first corner..

A dab of the excellent 320mm Brembo brakes up front, combined with the composure of the sophisiticated USD Paioli forks makes the CCM feel planted entering a bend, "Is that all you can muster?" it seems to ask the rider. Press on harder and the bike simply takes all you can throw at it. Off camber, uphill, downhill, rough or smooth, the WP rear shock has it all covered, the wide 17in tyres hungry for ever more demanding lean angles.

Once I reach a half mile long striaght I finally find the characterful Supermoto's flaw- cruising. Up to 75mph the bike is bucket loads of fun, any more and you are not on a twisty enough road. As a trip to Scotland is looming, I intend to add a higher final gear and find a few more bhp- check back soon!!

Return of the BMW Art Car

BMW's 'Art Car' is back. Artist and Sculpturist Jeff Koons has taken on the responsibility of designing the paint job for the 18th version of the famous collaberation between racing BMWs and breakthrough 'creative types'.

Dubbed the 'rainbow' treatment, Koons' brush strokes will follow in the footsteps of famous names such as Andy Warhol and David Hockney. The car underneath the rainbow is rather special too. BMW's latest GT2 M3 GTR V8 will compete at Les Mans 24 Hours in 2010, cementing it's place in the history books.

2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200

Ducati have released their new 2010 Mulitstrada 1200, a super-trail bike with the BMW 1200 GS firmly in its sights. Ducati aimed to produce a comfortable, reliable touring machine that was able to produce sports bike levels of performance on almost any terrain. Ducati have fitted a smoother, more efficient version of the latest liquid-cooled Testastretta powerplant from their own flagship 1198cc superbike.

Promising 'four bikes-in-one' available by the flick of a switch, the 2010 Multistrada posseses technology in abundance. Four distinct riding modes, Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro- endow the Multistrada with variable power, torque delivery, suspension and traction control settings. In both Sport and Touring modes the full 150bhp is available, whilst in Urban and Enduro settings, power is limited to a more manageable 100bhp.

Also new is the ride-by-wire throttle system. There is no throttle cable on the new Mulitstrada, the rider's inputs are now electronically transmitted to the throttle bodies. Depending on which riding mode is selected the control unit then decides the ideal power delivery of the engine. Combining this level of computer intelligence with a slipper clutch must make for incredibly smooth progress. All impressive stuff, but I would'nae like to experience a faulty one..

Weighing in at a paltry 189kg (dry) the new Mulitstrada has been on a rather impressive diet. Ducati believe it's the lowest in it's class, although once the 20 litre tank is full of go-go juice, that figure will undoubtedly creep past the 200kg mark.

Advanced instrument controlled Ohlins suspension is supplied on the higher spec 'S' model in the form of Ducati Electronic Suspension. This permits spring pre-load, rebound and compression damping adjustments on the fly. Of the two versions available the Touring model comes with a centre-stand, heated grips and purpose made panniers, whilst the Sport model is a stripped down beasty with various carbon components.

With some added clever touches including hands-free start, adjustable windscreen and LED indicators on the handguards, the punchy 2010 Ducati Multistrada is a direct competitor to BMW's class leading, hardy GS and upcoming Yamaha Tenere 1200. But, if you are a die-hard sportsbike fan looking for a grown up machine with long distance, possible two-up continent crossing abilities, the Multistrada should definately be at the top of your wish list.

I'll take a Touring S model in white please, but don't just take my word for it- hear what MCN have to say about it on video whilst testing the Multistrada in Lanzarote. Now where did I put that £14,000!?

Stirling Moss Acquires Porsche RS 61

British motor racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss has purchased the Gooding & Co Amelia Island auctioned 1961 Porsche RS Spyder, one of the last Spyders built by Porsche that used the potent 4-cam engine. Just one week ago Sir Stirling fell three floors down a lift shaft in his own home, breaking multiple bones and chipping four vertebrae in the process.

Still in hospital recovering, the recent purchase should cheer him up as he acquired the Bob Holbert, Thomas Payne and Millard Ripley 1962 Watkins Glen SCCA National-Winning RS 61. Stirling himself raced the Porsche RS cars of the early sixties and very nearly won the 1961 Targa Florio in a similar car.

U Rally- The Championship Charity Rally

Do you crave adventure? Do you love road trips? Are you free in August this year? Then why not enter a team into the Championship Charity U Rally, a fundraising event aimed at raising money for schools in Uganda with a mission, "To unlock the potential of Africa by driving for change."

With no set route, the destination is up to entrants, but in order to gain championship points teams must complete 'A series of challenges'. Without sounding like an episode of Top Gear the event promises to be a rewarding adventure. Entrants will have a chance to meet new people and see exciting places along the way whilst helping African children make a start in life.

With very few strict entrance rules, the type of vehicle entered is also entirely up to entrants. Motorbikes, cars, buses or milk floats are all eligible and there is no limit to the amount of passengers per team or vehicle. Several meeting places are also pre-organised, in the name of having a good ol' party.

Similar in spirit to the Mongol Rally, U Rally intends to fundraise as part of the rapidly growing charity Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS). Their aim is to widen access to education in Africa by founding and developing sustainable, low-fee secondary schools.

PEAS also work in collaboration with Bounce, the charity who provide sports facilities for schools in Africa.

ROAD TEST- A Tale of Two Norton Inter's

The Norton International was the pre-war flagship bike for Norton from its inception in 1932. Used for racing both by the Norton factory Works racers, clubman racers and for fast roadwork, the International was produced in 350 and 500 versions (with a few 600cc bikes for sidecar racers). The first bikes were produced with girder forks at the front and rigid rear ends , with plunger rear suspension appearing at first on the Works bikes and later on the customers models. The very last pre-war racing Inters were very quick specialist machines and were christened "Manx" by virtue of the marques immense racing record in the Isle of Man TT and Manx GP races.

Post war, the Inter acquired telescopic front forks as well as plunger rear suspension from 1947 until 1952, when the Inters had a final makeover with the adoption of a version of the acclaimed Featherbed frame, which took it up to its final demise in 1958

Keen to ride both the post war plunger and featherbed bikes on modern day public roads in Somerset, I spent a fabulous day in the brisk March sunshine comparing road manners whilst scaring a few horse riders in the process!

1949 Norton International 350 Clubmans

First up the 1949 350cc 'Plunger' Inter. Having spent many years in a leaking shed in Northumberland and once raced by Bill Camier in the 1949 Isle of Man TT, this Clubmans spec machine has been fully restored by Mike Pemberton and George Cohen.

Now demonstrating a distinctly road bias set-up, this machine has a comfortable but sporty riding position demonstrated by the turned up bars and lack of 'bum-perch' seat. The elegant but rorty Brooklands exhaust can, rear set footrests and lack of lights turn the balance back towards road racer. Considering the engine, recently rebuilt by George Cohen, has covered less than 50 miles since the rebuild, this road test was an exploration of handling rather than outright speed. We'll save that for another day at Wroughton Airfield.

Starting easily on the first kick, the 350 makes a fabulous noise. No doubt thanks to the Brooklands can, I scare a pair of juvenile ponies and their riders, trotting up the neaby bridleway. Cutting the engine immediately I make my apologies. Horse-hair-raiser over I restart the 350, again first kick.

Once underway, the free revving, all alloy single ohc motor begins to warm up and I am rewarded with a charmingly smooth power delivery. Positive gear changes are very straight forward and within a mile I am begginning to swing the Inter into corners with confidence. Approaching a bumpy kink in the road, I am keen to discover the cornering abilities of the plunger frame. Entering the bend at 55mph I learn a shift in body position to the rear of the bike helps the dampers smother road imperfections also emphasising the need for a bum seat.

On reaching a long straight I find even in run-in state this 350 Inter can still reach illegal speeds with ease as I instinctly overtake a Sunday-driver-driven Nissan Micra. Back in the fifities, the driver of an unsuspecting Ford Anglia would have received quite a fright. A practical, sporty machine with a wealth of charm and character, the '49 Inter is a real gem.

1954 Norton International 500 Clubmans

Next up, the 1954 Featherbed 500 Inter Clubmans, another machine with a fascinating history. Raced by G W Shekell in the 1954 Clubmans TT, finishing 12th at an average speed of 80.25 mph (the second Norton to finish) and restored by Bernie Allen in 2009, I rode this bike at last years Norton Owners Golden Jubilee event at Donington Park.

Restored to Clubmans specification, including an all alloy engine, no lights, rear set footrests, Manx front numberplate and seat, this Inter has a very purposeful appearance. Second kick brings the 500cc motor to life, producing a deeper but no less fantastic sound. The riding position of a racing featherbed is much heavier on the wrists than the earlier Inters, even with flat bars fitted, resembling that of a more modern sports bike.

Fitted with race cams, the featherbed Inter is happiest on an open throttle which makes for swift, rewarding progress especially blatting along country A-roads. The long Manx seat permits plenty of movement in the saddle, the drum brakes are soft by modern standards but provide ample stopping power.

With more grip than outright power, the 500 Inter is a very confidence inspiring machine and a bike that cries out to be ridden. The combination of low weight and a rev hungry engine make for a smile inducing road experience, the bike responding to delicate inputs and with none of the plunger's evident pre-war feel. With only 50 bikes built to Clubmans specification, this is a very rare machine as many were turned into Triton cafe racers. Following on his Honda VFR 750 my Dad commented, "You looked like you were having fun!", and indeed I was.

The 'Alfabeast'

Bike engined cars are a relatively tried and tested formula- Fit a high revving, compact Hayabusa motor into a featherlight, excellent handling chassis and Bob's your uncle, you'll have lots of fun. In the eyes of engineering challenges though, Crossbreed Cycles have done the complete opposite, fitting a 2500cc Alfa Romeo V6 lump into a hardtail, chopper style frame.

After receiving inspiration from the 1926 Harley Davidson racer at the Pamplona Collection auction recently, this bike is impractical for sure, but incites the same rebellious feeling in me.

Many readers will be quick to dismiss this project/post as Orange County Chopper's next episode but on closer inspection this bike displays a huge commitment to combining retro bikes and cars, in one macho, if not bumpy ride.

Consisting of a Kraftek frame, Kawasaki ZXR750 front end and four speed Harley gearbox, the Alfabeast also has two Weber downdraft carbs poking out right through the top of the tank!

Hot on the heels of Porsche's hybrid GT3 R racer, the sensational 918 Hybrid Spyder has crawled out from under the blankets at Geneva today. Mating a mid-mounted race bred 3.4 litre V8 with a pair of front axel mounted electric motors, this sleek answer to Audi's R8 and e-tron supercars, places Porsche at the forefront of high performance hybrid technology.

Each electric motor produces 109hp which, when used in conjunction with the 500hp RS Spyder derived naturally aspirated V8, results in 718hp! With all that power but still capable of returning 78mpg and 70g Co2/km the 918 Spyder secures the future existence for high powered, highly efficient supercars. Smaller in body than a Carrera GT, the 918 possesses Boxster proportions, albeit capable of a very un-Boxster-like 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and 194mph.

Resembling an intimidating hungry shark, Porsche designers have adopted styling cues direct from Porsche royalty, the Le Mans winning 917. Brimming with exciting new detail, the 918 is not shy in admitting a racy appearance. Side exit exhausts sit menacingly close to futuristic new wheels hiding electric motors and ceramic brakes. Let's just hope they put it into production.

Bonhams Auction- The Pamplona Collection

Bonhams hosted the auction of the Pamplona Collection at the RAF Musuem in London last weekend. The Spanish owned private collection of approximately 100 classic and vintage motorcycles, the majority built before 1950, included many rare models from names including Indian, Harley Davidson, NSU, BMW, Terrot, Peugeot, Wanderer, Griffon and many more.

Also included in the sale were several in-line four cylinder machines from Henderson, Ace and Cleveland. The feature bike of the auction was a 1931 Brough Superior SS100 with a reserve set at £120,000. Hosted light heartedly by auctioneer Malcolm Barber, a very high percentage of the bikes sold successfully, although the Brough failed to sell with bidding reaching £85,000.

The RAF Museum in Hendon provided a fascinating back-drop for the Bonhams Pamplona Collection, this Phantom F4 fighter sharing hanger space with 1913 Griffon 350cc V-twin pedal assisted machine. The French built Griffon sold for £6,500 plus commission.

Fantastic 1926 Harley Davidson 74ci-1200cc Model J OHV racer was my pick of all the lots. Engineered to perform, this machine boasted an overhead-valve conversion, straight through pipes and with a wonderful period patina, provided an exceptional ownership proposition. Good value at £26,000 plus fees.

BMW was well represented with a range of single and flat twin engined machines including Lot 40, a beautfully presented 1936 494cc R5 reaching double it's estimate at £13,500 plus commission.

Beautifully demonstrated by Pops is this 1937 Czechoslavakian Bohmerland 603cc Langtouren boasting a long, low frame and for the first time on a motorcycle, cast alloy wheels. This ultra rare leading link front forked machine fetched £31,500.

Very rare 1923 Mabeco 596cc V-twin 'Indian Copy' received plentiful interest with a hammer price of £11,500

1931 'Streamline' Henderson 1300cc KJ Four capable of 100mph fetched £31,500 plus commission.

This stylish 1936 NSU 494cc OSL sold for £5,750 plus commission.

Honda 3R-C Concept

The Honda 3R-C is a three wheeled, all weather urban trike concept with electric, zero emission power. Even if you are tired of relentless future concepts that never come to fruition, it's hard for Mr Motor Tweeter to ignore this three wheeled car-bike crossover.

Designed by Honda's Research and Design facility in Milan the 3R-C incorporates an active wind shield that when parked covers the cockpit and when in motion provides enveloping protection from the elements. The driver, positioned low down in the vehicle would be well protected from London's big puddle filled potholes. Very clever Honda. All it needs now is the VFR1200 engine and I'm sold.

The first of a whole line of new Minis on the horizon, the Countryman, a crossover model with raised ride height and larger interior space now stars in a music video. With music by Cyndi Lauper the 'Life is out there' production contains cows, dogs, iPhones, basejumpers and much much more.

Priced from £16,000, the new Countryman will be available in two or four wheel drive and with several engine and spec variants including diesels and the turbocharged Cooper S. Appearance aside my guess is that Mini will have few problems securing numerous orders.

Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Based on the current 911 GT3 R Porsche have annouced the arrival of their new Hybrid race car. Powered by the same rear mounted 480 hp 4.0 litre flat six the R Hybrid also carries two electric motors up front powering the front wheels. Located in the passenger floorwell sits a flywheel capable of spinning up to 40,000rpm which stores kinetic energy from braking. Once full energy is stored an extra 120kw is directed to the front wheels, (the equivalent of 160hp). Available in six to eight second bursts the technology is similar to the KERS system used by the Williams F1 team and would provide a useful overtake power surge or improved fuel economy.

Entered into the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will act as a running 'racing laboratory' car in order for a more refined, full-on assualt at Le Mans in 2012.

Very forward hybrid thinking from Porsche I feel. Expect hybrid Porsche road cars by 2015 then.

NSU TT/TTS

First seen in 1967 the compact NSU TT was slightly larger than the out going Prinz but nevertheless lightweight and very well engineered. The air-cooled, all alloy 1177cc in-line four cylinder chain driven OHC engine producing 70 bhp positioned over the back wheels was advanced for its day.

Weighing only 700kg and with excellent traction thanks to all independent suspension, the TT became a hit with enthusiasts and keen drivers. The smaller capacity, higher revving 996cc TTS became a successful racer in the under 1 litre class and with simple modifications can be made to produce over 100bhp. Impressive today, even more so thirty years ago!

Useful as a wide arched hill climb car or at auto tests the TT is still campaigned as a racer, scaring Minis and Hillman Imps all over Europe. The NSU brand was eventually bought out by VW and merged with Auto Union to create Audi. The rear engined TT model was phased out in 1973 to make way for more profitable Audi and VW models whilst reducing the competition for the VW Beetle.

As a hill climb or sprint car the TT was nimble, light and powerful for it's class. Easily recognisable, owners set engine covers slightly ajar to improve cooling, watch the video links below to find out for yourself!

1974 Ford Escort 1300 Executive

Famous for winning rallies the world over, Ford's beloved Mk1/2 Escort is usually photographed 'tail out' whilst screaming past cold looking spectators on a secluded section of an Irish Rally. Built in Cork and remaining in Ireland, Paddy McGrath's spotless Mk1 1300E has undoubtedly never seen a rally stage and with just 58,000 miles from new, this four door Executive is all the better for it.

Presented in original specification (except the body colour) Paddys Escort has the 1298cc ohv single cam engine, also fitted to the Sport model. Packing 74 bhp the Ford crossflow engine provides ample power for relaxed cruising in comfort.

Exclusive to the Executive Escort, the wooden dash trim, deeper pile carpets and period perfect vinyl roof have all aged well in this car, whilst the addition of a sportier steering wheel lends a sporty feel. This 'high spec' model also shares the flared front wings from the Mexico and Sport variants.

Paddy beleives the only way to originality is to remain original and with so many modified Escorts out there, his truly concours example is a rare sight.

I've just returned from the MCN Bike Show held at Excel in London and took it on myself to photograph some of the tastiest and newest bikes to go on sale this year. The highlights for me included the BMW S1000R, the new Norton Commando series and an impressively fabricated twin engined Tri-2-ton.

Vyrus 987 C3 4V The Most Powerful Production Motorcycle

Against conventional telescopic forks and underpowered modern bike engines, forward thinking Italian manufacturers Vyrus are now producing the 987 C3 4V, the worlds most powerful production motorcycle, complete with front and rear swingarms. Controlled by a series of rods the front end consists of a hub-centre-steered design, brainchild of ex Bimota deisgner Ascanio Rodorigo.

"The front end of a Vyrus doesn’t dive when you brake into the corners, which means you don’t get the weight transfer on the front wheel. This allows you to brake later and corner harder and always keeps the bike tremendously stable and safe. At the same time when accelerating, the rear end, doesn't 'sit down'. The result is an experience that always feels easy and secure."

Packing over 210 bhp and 107ftlb of torque the flagship supercharged Vyrus will also weigh less than a current R1. Utilising a tweaked version of Ducati's 1198 motor and chassis, Rodrigo believes “Everybody will be able to ride it without killing themselves”. Let's hope so Rodrigo.

Also available will be two non-supercharged versions producing 170 bhp and 184 bhp depending on what level of tune you require. Race spec traction control systems and clever engine management help deal with the power delivery and also help warrant price tags of £44k, £50k and a ridiculous £70k for the supercharged version.

Although McLaren states their new mid engined supercar is designed strictly as a road car that's exactly what they said about the winning F1 at Le Mans! Displayed in several colour/sponsor variations, I wouldn't hold your breath too long to see something similar in the flesh.

Beautiful Brown

Brown cars. Now there's an ugly, slightly upsetting thought. Second to purple perhaps, brown is surely not cool I can hear you thinking. Well think again my petrol headed inter-webbers. Brown not only says I don't care if you're not looking at me, it also says I don't care if my car is the same colour as shit. Again, another upsetting thought.

Polished brown, contrary to popular belief, doesn't resemble a polished turd but displays a confidence, a certain 70s long haired confidence that along with facial hair and big rim spectacles says, try me, I'm not afraid of what you think. The fact that dirt is also brown means your car requires less cleaning, less effort and more lazy cool points.

1954 Clubman's TT Norton 350 International

These images show Isle of Man road racer Geoff Tanner re-united with his 1954 Clubman's TT Norton 350 for the feature in issue 138 of Classic Racer magazine in the Summer of 2009. Geoff finished 5th at a race speed of 81.54 mph for four laps of the 37 mile TT Mountain course with a fastest lap of 83mph. The first Norton home, Geoffs lap was the fastest set by a 350cc Norton in the entire Clubman's races.

He was delighted to see the bike in all its former glory, having not seen it in over 50 years! Accurately restored by Bernie Allen, the bike now runs beautifully and sounds fantastic through it's open pipe. Once sat on the bike, Geoff looked totally at home. Sporting a fixed grin whilst blipping the throttle and sounding like a true racer, he commented that he remembered it to be "Bloody slow!".

Essentially road bikes the Clubman's specification allowed only very minor race upgrades. Lights, silencer and centre stand were deleted whilst the addition of a fly screen, a set of Manx mudguards and seat were added. Rear-set foot rests completed the transformation from road bike to racer.

The following year in 1955 Geoff went on to win the Manx Grand Prix in both 350 and 500 classes cementing his talent as a racer. He also competed as part of the Continental Circus in Europe.

Two new BMW 'M' variants have appeared today including what may well be the replacement for the previous E46 CSL. Dubbed the 'Competition Package' the latest version of BMW's beautifully balanced two door V8 Coupe will go on sale as a cost option on standard cars in 2011.

With a drop in ride height of 10mm, drool worthy 19 inch wheels and a louder, meaner exhaust the Competition Package is rumoured to cost a premium of approxiamtely £4,000. Ever since the decision was taken by Mercedes Benz to bring back the Gullwing model in the shape of the AMG SLS and rumoured SLK variant (see below), numerous copy cats, accessorizers and wannabes have somehow hitched a ride. Some good and some bad, this post will make an attempt to display everything Gullwing from shoes to customs and everything in between.

These pretty images come from Gullwing America, a design garage looking to bring new life into the old Gullwing shape. Hand crafted with modern Mercedes running gear, these Panamericana 300SLs epitomise the blend of old with new. Available with V8 auto or V6 manual power, these ultra cool retro newbies are the brainchild of Arturo Alonso, the man also responsible for designing the Bentley S3 E Concept.

This must be the biggest gullwing crime in history. Based on an ORIGINAL 300SL this camo coloured cock-up is the pride and joy of fashion house designer Nigo of Bathing Ape fame. The BAPE modifications are not just skin deep either. Under the bonnet the original fuel injected six cylinder motor is replaced with a modern 6.0 litre V8 and although AMG sanctioned such cruelty to style, the wheels fitted are just wrong. Simple. Next time leave the squaddie treatment to your Phantoms and Veyrons please Nigo.

Cobra fans will now be pleased to hear that AC can offer you a brand new one with yes, you guessed it, the gullwing treatment. Nonetheless, I can't help but see a strong resemblance to the extinct Dodo bird, with these puny flappers. Must try harder AC..

Shoes designed in conjunction with the new Mercedes SLS and with motoring in mind are never going to be the trendiest type of footwear and I'm afraid these Italian designed (where else), Santoni driving shoes are following in the footsteps of the awkward looking Pumas that came before them. At least they're all black this time.

This 300SL Gullwing Drag Racer is a home made replica (sigh of relief), fabricated impressively im sure you'll agree and packing over 1000hp! Capable of setting an 8.1 second 1/4 mile @ 166mph this winged flyer is the fastest Gullwing variation.

Producing cars inspired by aviation is something Spyker have fully mastered. Compared to a cumbersome and slightly overweight Bristol Fighter, the latest Spyker C8 Aileron is jaw droppingly beautiful. The latest shots taken in Italy obviously didn't take long to think up though. Sweeping cliff top road, check. Outside an Italian church, check. Scenic view, check.

Where are the vintage aeroplanes? The moody insides of a private hangar? The years of historical aviation influence. Mama Mia Spyker.

Still, at least all the air intakes on the sills and roof resemble mounted machine guns!

If I say "Volvo" you'll probably say and feel very little. Either that or images of yummy mummies in large SUVs will pop into your head followed by the dreary image of a school history teacher loading books into the back of a big orange estate car, wearing socks and sandals of course.

Volvo cars did once cut the mustard. Lest we forget the P1800 Roger Moore drove in the 60s TV show The Saint. The sporty roofline, the twin tail fin rear wings, this was a car with genuine style- a Swedish Mustang if you like. Following the 121, 122 and 123 models the boxy styling of the 70s took over and the footwear faux pas slowly began to emerge.

The brave guys at Vintage Performance Developments have set out to shake this stuffy image providing a service to turn 60s Volvos into competitive classic racers. Take a look through the highly detailed site, I especially liked the 200+hp P1800 vintage racer for sale.

Considered by many as the definitive roadster, Porsche's mostly mis-conceived entry level sports car has a lot going for it. Excellent build quality, reliability and a badge to be proud of are just several reasons why Boxster ownership is rated so highly. The 3.2 litre flat six 250hp motor in the 'S' is the one to go for, but all engines perform well. Gearboxes, brakes, and suspension are all top quality items, whilst the electrics and fabric hood require careful inspection at purchase. The driving experience, especially the handling, roadholding and balance are in a class of their own for this sector.

The BMW Z3 M Coupe has always been a favourite of mine and with prices now beginning to dip below ten grand, almost all of the depreciation has been suffered. The striking 'bread wagon' appearance did not appeal to everyone but you couldn't ignore the muscular rear arches, increased rigidity over the Roadster and practical boot. Sold in the UK with the E36 M3's 3.2 litre straight six, the little two seater coupe had 315hp to play with.

A Very British Motor Show At Goodwood

Goodwood is to host the 2010 British Motor Show according to reliable sources. Petrolhead Lord March has apparently agreed to hold the previously cancelled event just one day before the Festival of Speed. Quick to respond, featured brand Alfa Romeo also plan to debut the Giulietta at the highly secretive event.

It is not yet decided whether public tickets will be available, but most prominent manufacturers will no doubt be fighting for invites, much unlike the last British Motor Show then.

What this new show will do though is glamourise Goodwood's hallowed driveway as prospective customers are rumoured to be allowed to test drive new cars on the famous stretch of tarmac.

Michael Schumacher is fighting fit for his return to Formula One racing in 2010. The seven time world champion completed testing in a GP2 car at Jerez and suffered no problems related with his neck injury caused by his motorcycle racing accident.

Driving for Brawn Mercedes in 2010, the German is clearly very excited about his return to top end motorsport. "It really is as if my batteries were fully loaded. My energy is back completely. I really notice how the prickle is coming, how motivated I am because I so much look forward to this competition. It is about time to start this whole thing."

The 2010 season is shaping up to be a real thriller with McLaren England v Brawn Germany and Button v Hamilton!!

ROAD TEST: 1996 HONDA VFR 750

The iconic V4 from Honda has been described as many things from 'as good as it gets' to 'positively sterile', but a certain Ron Haslam has his own point of view. Rocket Ron, who had misplaced his race bike, took on a field of factory race machines from the back of the grid, on a brand new VFR750 and came fourth! Incidentally, sales of these bikes over the years has been staggering, in 2006 Honda sold nearly 200 in January alone, this is the same story ever since its original release in 1986.

Once on the road this 13 year old albeit low mileage VFR is quick to impress. Finish and build quality are clearly attributes Honda understood in 1996, the classic black and white dials complementing excellent panel fit and precise controls. The NACA duct on the side of the fairing is fully functional, whilst also hinting at its racing pedigree, gives off an almost Ferrari vibe. Rifle-bolt gear changes encourage sporty riding styles although this pre-VTEC edition was the last of the carburettor fueled models and provides ample reserve for instinctive overtakes with no noticeable flat spots or peaks.

Smooth, torquey and with a seemingly endless power band, it just begs to be ridden and rewards smooth inputs. Sporting 105hp, the bike can reach 150mph with handling to match thanks to a clever single arm rear set-up and the low positioning of the engine. The crafted aluminium frame that cradles the compact V4 motor is very well made and once the tank is removed provides excellent access for maintenance.

The comfortable seat with removable pillion cover and effective wind protection suggest realistic touring capabilities and reliability of the V4 has been repeatedly impressive. The bike has an ability to simply lend itself to your mood at the time. Not a Jack of all trades but a master of many. What Honda have created is the perfect compromise for a keen rider who requires an accomplished speed machine, but needs to commute during the week, keep up with modern sports bikes at the weekend and visit the South of France for their holidays.

Bimota DB8 Biposto

Exotic Italian motorcycle manufacturer Bimota edge one step closer to the mainstream with the new DB8. Famous for matching existing power plants with innovative and industry leading chassis design, Bimota have done something very different with the Biposto.

Now sporting a pillion seat, although you'd have to be Kylie-sized to want to use it, Bimota have managed to retain the exciting chassis and bodywork design and blended in an Espresso of practicality.

Cradling an 170hp 1198 Ducati V-Twin motor, the Biposto (meaning seats two) uses cheaper chromoly materials for the frame rather than carbon fibre as used on the exquisite DB7. This in hand brings prices down to a more reasonable £20,000! I know, it's still not exactly cheap but Bimota ownership just got that tinchy bit closer. Now for Kylie..

The Next-Gen Pagani Zonda C9

An updated version of the hair raising Pagani Zonda will storm onto the supercar stage later this year boasting over 3700 new parts, a power output of 700hp and an increase in torque to over 1000Nm.

Dubbed the C9 the latest Zonda will retain the 7.o litre Mercedes V12 but speculation is looming on whether any forced induction will be included. The new C9 will meet US crash safety standards and California's strict emission laws. Mr Schwarzenegger, breath a sigh of relief.

None of this seems that important to me however, because Horacio Pagani himself has confirmed the use of an ultra sexy carbon-titanium chassis. Materials like that ought to be illegal!

TechArt GT Street RS

TechArt are no strangers to producing biblically fast 911s and here we have another of the German uber-tuners' offerings. The GT Street RS started life as a Porsche GT2- no slouch already let's be honest, but with an extra 160hp over the standard car the Street RS has the brawn to back up those slightly scary looks.

The lap record around the Sachsenring track was previuosly held by an angry looking Lamborghini Murcielago LP-640 SV, posting a time of 1.36.29. TechArt's Street RS has recently smashed that time by nearly five seconds clocking a 1.31.94 for the 3671 metre circuit.

Just to show off, those sausage loving TechArt guys then posted a 3.5 second 0-100kmh time in the Street RS. Apparently all this showing off proves their in-built ethos of "High Speed, Pace and Uniqueness". How very German.

Prodrive Launches Subaru N2010

Prodrive, British famed WRC and Le Mans preparation specialists have taken the covers off their latest rally-racer the N2010. Available to entrants at £120,000 the Group N Spec Imprezza packs a 2 litre flat four motor with twin scroll turbocharging. Rolling on Ohlins shocks and AP Racing brakes the latest customer, rally prepared car packs an extra 20hp than the standard model.

The addition of a rollcage and three seperate differentials ensure that the N2010 is more competitive than a Super 2000 spec machine and at nearly half the price, say Prodrive.

All the more significant is that Subaru have pulled out of the WRC this year but with Prodrive producing the N2010, they believe there is still life left in the previously rally branded marque.

Re-introducing a sports car that has been a firm favourite with enthusiasts around the world for the last decade is a design brief that takes careful consideration. With the new folding hard-top and several engine options available, Mazda, with their stylish new MX5 Roadster Coupe seem to have all bases well and truly covered.

The first thing that strikes you is the muscular new body design, with bulging wheel arches, wider 17 in. wheels and lower sports suspension. The larger fixed headlights and the excellent folding hard-top takes just 12 seconds to fold neatly away. Any preconceptions of the MX5 resembling a ‘hair dressers car’ are rapidly dissolved.

By opting for the snug, heated leather seats the new MX5 provides a sophisticated all weather cabin. In the glove compartment there is a handy docking point for your MP3 player. Finished in understated black, the dashboard and steering wheel highlight the level of quality materials used throughout this car, making for a pleasing place to while away the miles.

But this is a sports car, and sports cars should provide a thrill. The range-topping 2.0 Sport Coupe model, with a 4 cylinder, 16v engine produces a healthy 158bhp at 6700rpm. The car is nippy and light on its feet, soaking up the bumps extremely well for a compact sports car and whilst happy to cruise at motorway speeds, darting along country roads reveals its front-engined / rear wheel drive sports car pedigree.

Accurate turn in and crisp steering add to the overall quality of the package, whilst the multi-link rear and excellent 6 speed gearbox ensure the power strikes the perfect balance for this iconic convertible.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that the faultless folding roof does nothing to compromise the boot space, nor does it dent the pure driving experience famed by the original MX5.

At £19,210, the MX5 Roadster Coupe Sport is a desirable and practical sports car that has matured since the introduction of the original. ROAD TEST: 2004 BMW 1200 GS

First impressions of the famed 'Round The World Bike' centre around its size. This is a big bike, I'm nearly 6"2 and throwing your leg over is still a tricky yoga move. Once aboard though, BMW have mastered a near perfect riding position with the GS. Wide, thin gauge bars provide such a delicate feel when seated that at first the GS belies its 200kg dry weight. The wide protruding cylinder heads remain distinctive but also add to the wind protection on offer.

The hand controls retain the BMW quality but still lack imagination when it comes to innovation (except the love 'em or hate 'em indicators), at this price.

Pulling away on a light clutch and selecting second rewards with a positive and reassuring clunk, and as the revs rise the 105hp flat twin immediately catches your attention with a torque rich surge through every gear all the way to illegal speeds. In fact, no matter what gear you happen to be in, a firm twist of the throttle sees you hunkering down and searching out the next planet to conquer.

Sheltered behind the adjustable windscreen, the effect of wind buffeting is highly reduced which in turn allows the innate ability of the GS to carry the rider at speed over less than perfect surfaces with consummate ease. The thought of riding the big BMW day after day is a pleasant one, which for me explains why this bike has been so popular. A bike famous not only for it's TV appearance but because it takes you places you never thought you could reach.

Way back in 1989 Car covered a head-to-head with the high tech Porsche 959 versus the road racer Ferrari F40. As the magazine that invented the group test and defined the term supercar, my introduction to motoring magazines was set.

Working alongside Tim Pollard and Chris Chilton, I was given news stories to write and upload, along with other research tasks and photo sourcing responsibilities. I was also taken on the group test shoot for the first Nissan GTR in the country alongside Audi's R8 and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

FREELANCE AT CAR MAGAZINE
Approximately a month after the two weeks I worked for Car, I was offered freelance assisting and driving work by Tim Pollard to join Ben Barry, contributing writer on a shoot in central Wales for a comparison road test between the new Impreza WRX STi and the Honda Civic Type R. I thoroughly enjoyed driving the cars for tracking shots and helping the photographer setting up stills. Here are some images I took during the day.

I began working in publishing for Merrick Media, Bath in Feb 2007 writing news stories and editing web content with the main obligation of improving Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and attracting more viewers. The site supports the magazine aiming to help readers with all their overseas investment, property and relocation needs.

News pieces covered all topics that affected overseas investors looking to relocate or buy homes abroad. I learnt the importance of constructing accurate, key word rich, web friendly articles to be used as primary features for the front page. I enjoyed editing copy, researching news stories and manipulating the site. I also learnt photo resizing skills, web editing programs and content management software.

As an unpaid intern I worked for 6 months having articles published and gaining very valuable experience of website management and editorial content. I enjoyed the freedom I was offered in this position and achieved increased viewings on Google News and keyword searches. The site has undergone significant changes in the last two years and my archive work is now removed.

Vietnam Feb 2009

Earlier this year my girlfriend and I visited Vietnam with the aim of exploring the Central Highlands by motorbike. We wanted to learn more about the country's history and how the area suffered from the war against commionism nearly forty years ago. Shortly after watching the BBC Top Gear episode where the presenters travelled the length of the country by motorbike, I was keen to taste adventure again and sample the amazing food from this part of S.E. Asia. We hired small 100cc semi-automatic Honda Dream Scooters and our guide, Phil Phuc of The Dalat Easy Riders, took us to some of the remotest parts of this quite beautiful country.
